The first hydrogen fuel cell bus service in India has begun operating in Leh.

With the first-ever commercial trial of the cutting-edge technology on a public route in the high-altitude, chilly desert of the union region of Ladakh, India's first hydrogen fuel cell bus service is beginning in Leh.

Under a global expression of interest that was floated in April 2020, Ashok Leyland is providing the buses at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crore apiece. The passenger fares for the hydrogen fuel cell buses will be the same as those for the current 9-meter diesel buses. Any loss will be made up for by NTPC.
